ELVIS AND JUNE JUANICO

  "IN THE TWILIGHT OF MEMORY"

On Monday, June 27, 1955, Elvis performed at the Airman's Club at Keesler Air Force Base, outside Biloxi, Mississippi.  After the concert, Elvis met June Juanico.  June, who was from Biloxi, went to see him perform that day.  Elvis at the time was on the verge of stardom.

June Juanico (born 1938) is a former beauty queen from Biloxi.  She and Elvis had a relationship in 1955 and 1956.

"Elvis was the love of my life. I met him in the summer of '55, when Elvis was just a regional star. I was 17 and he was 20. He had been to my hometown of Biloxi several times before, and people told me: ''You have to see it'', and I went one night.

"I thought he was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen, with those big dreamy eyes... What I remember most about that night was sitting in his car, on my doorstep, talking to him, while my mother was watching what we were doing. The first thing I said was ''What's your real name?'' I'd never heard of a name like Elvis. And he said, ''What do you mean my real name? my name is Elvis Aaron Presley.'' We sat there until the sun came up...He was shocked because my parents were divorced. He thought marriage was a lifelong thing, and when he got married, it would be forever. And he told me all about his twin brother who died at birth. I've never met anyone like him."

But their romance was tumultuous.  Speaking to a newspaper in 1956, Juanico lamented Elvis's propensity for callousness in their relationship.  “Eight months passed and I never heard from him.  No cards or anything.  Then I went to Memphis and it started all over again."

She was one of the only girls that Elvis's mother approved of.  Gladys adored her.

However, Elvis did not allow this romance to become too intimate.  In a 1997 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, June said that she blamed Colonel Parker for encouraging Elvis to date beautiful Hollywood women for publicity.

Elvis and June Juanico, in the summer of 1956, she had cut her hair. When Elvis saw her for the first time, he hugged her and told her: "it will grow back, it's fine".

While he was with her, Elvis had relationships with many other women, and June knew it.  Still, June had no doubt that Elvis loved her.

"Elvis is as unstable in love as he is on stage."  It was hard for June to know what place she had in his life among so many women, but she was happy to be one of them.

But Elvis couldn't commit to being with her, allegedly promising that she could be her "steady" girlfriend in three years.

But June was no longer willing to suffer more with this relationship.

At the end, June knew, as much as Elvis loved her,

he was on a path that no one could stop and that he would never be in control of his life. So she made the decision to move forward and not look back.

One day, after the film Loving You wrapped, Elvis telegraphed June in Biloxi, asking her to meet him in New Orleans during his brief train stopover.

There, in Elvis's private train car, she told him that she was engaged to someone else.  When the train started, June wasn't on it... But Elvis always was and always will be the love of her life.

In 1997 June wrote the book "Elvis: In the Twilight of Memory" a book full of feeling and insight, which conveys a life experience truthfully and without rancor, about a real Elvis Presley, about the man and her love for him, in a time and place bathed in the light of remembered love.
