"And the Grass Won't Pay No Mind" is a delightful song written and recorded by Neil Diamond in 1969.
Neil, who had always greatly admired Elvis, had reserved recording sessions with Chips Moman, at the glorious American Sound Studio in Memphis, for January 13, 1969, but Moman, who was more interested in Elvis recording than Neil -since both he and Marty Lacker had put a lot of effort into convincing Elvis to go and record the Americans- he asked Neil if he wouldn't mind changing the dates he had reserved and giving them to Elvis, to to which Neil kindly agreed.
In compensation for this nice gesture, Elvis promised him that he would record an album of his. And so he did.
This is how the idea of recording this song arose, which was recorded by Elvis on February 17, 1969 in the glorious American Sound and released for the first time on the double album "From Memphis to Vegas, From Vegas to Memphis", which would later be released also individually, as "Back in Memphis".
Elvis would also later record another Diamond song live: "Sweet Caroline".
Neil still remembers Elvis very fondly. They were neighbors in the house on Hillcrest Drive and the fence of their houses was adjoining. Neil still remembers how little Lisa Marie - who is no longer with us, although she will always remain in our hearts - and her son played and laughed through that fence... Beautiful times for little Lisa.
Another American gem where through Elvis's interpretation, you can see and feel the story of that scene as if you had it before you.
The story of two lovers for whom only that moment exists... you can feel their lips softly kissing or feel the warmth of the sun on them. See that bird flying, while you feel how the soft wind refreshes the sweat on the palms of your hands, and you can close your eyes and listen to the flowers grow and smell of fresh grass.
A moment when Elvis becomes so intimate, that... not even the grass will care.
Another minimally intimate delight that we can feel and visualize in the prodigious interpretation of Elvis in the American.
